WHEN you think of boxing, Ricky Hatton or Amir Kahn might spring to mind. A group in Weedon is looking to change that.
The Boxercise scheme in Weedon was launched last month and is being run by Peter Foley and Tom Haynes. The sessions are held at Weedon Village Hall in West Street every Friday between 7 and 8pm.
The scheme is based on the Boxercise programme and f
irst began in the UK in 1992 based upon training principles that have existed for more than 200 years.
It combines the use of both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and ensures a diverse workout and improves hand-eye co-ordination, balance and timing.
Peter said: “It is basically just a different way of people getting fit and hopefully a fun way.
“We are actually quite proud of the fact that we don’t have any boxing background and because of this, we can hopefully make the sessions fun and exciting.
“We are just personal trainers and we want to help people get fitter.”
The use of boxing as a form of fat burning and muscle toning gives one of the most intense cardio workouts you can find.
Boxing for Fitness is popular with men and women of all ages and the group has had three sessions so far.
Peter added: “We only have 10 members so far which is good because those people get a lot of personal help but we would obviously like more people to come along to the sessions.
“At the moment, with the way the classes are set up, it can act as a motivator because there are other people around you trying to get fit.
“There are many people who find going on the treadmill, cycle or a cross trainer too much of a chore. This is a much more friendly way of getting fit.”
Peter also believes that there are mental benefits to be gained from boxing for fitness.
He added: “When you are doing the boxing moves, you are training the brain and improving your reactions so it is good for everyone’s all round health.”
If you would like to learn how to box to get fit, you are invited to turn up at Weedon Village Hall when the sessions start. The classes cost £4 per session.
