THE Royal and Derngate in Northampton is opening its autumn season with a bold new production.
Olivier award nominee Anna Francolini stars in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie.
It tells the story of the outspoken and charismatic teacher, Miss Brodie, who demands utter devotion from her chosen set of girls – the school’s best – but her sensualit
y creates bitter rivalries and her passion for all things Italian leads to her embracing fascist politics.
The story, set in 1930s Edinburgh, sees her in danger of destroying herself and all of those around her and is told through the memories of the women moulded and damaged by Miss Brodie.
It is the first major staging of Muriel Spark’s classic story since the National Theatre’s production in 1998 and is directed by Laurie Sansom, building on the success gained with plays including Follies, Frankenstein and J B Priestley’s The Glass Cage.
Also in the cast include Hywel Simons, who played Sergeant Craig Gilmore in The Bill and Northampton-born actress Sarah Moyle who recently starred in the West End musical Daddy Cool.
The play is on the Royal stage with the opening night next Friday and runs until October 4. All evening performances start at 7.45pm with a small number of matinee performances available on Thursday and Saturdays.
Tickets are available now and are priced between £10.50 and £26.50. For more information or to book tickets, phone the box office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
