I refer to the Talk of the Town column in last week's Daventry Express in which the town clerk Dec Rosier explains one or two issues regarding the town council but not fully one would suggest.
Yet again a member of the town council brags that they are unpaid – if this is the case where has the money gone? Not long ago they stated in this newspaper that they had a £150,000 under-spend.
Add to this £270,000, their precept for this year,
and you get to a staggeringly near half-a-million pounds! Not bad when you consider what the tax payer gets in return – administration of allotments, tending the war memorial, Christmas lights and hanging baskets.
Mr Rosier states "our electorate" – quite something when the vast majority of town councillors were not elected but had to be co-opted.
In effect the town council is little more than an unelected quango.
He goes on to say "a small team of dedicated staff" – rumour has it the council has expanded into additional office space presumably at extra cost but why is the space required if the team is that small?
Something that he doesn't say is that yet another town councillor has resigned. Could this be true one wonders? If so when will the by-election be or shall we have another
co-option.
Next time Mr Rosier can we have the full story?
Cllr Colin Poole
Daventry District Council
