I am writing in response to your article in last week's Daventry Express headlined 'Tormented by drunks'.
I was very disappointed to read that the 35 elderly residents of Spring Gardens feel intimidated on a daily basis and I have to say that we were not aware of the problems they are facing.
Over the last four months, police have been called about ei
ght incidents of drunken behaviour in this area but no-one has reported the kind of ongoing issues mentioned in your story. Now that the Daventry Express has brought this to our attention, the Daventry South Safer Community Team will be responding positively to tackle this problem – we want people to feel safe and secure in their own homes.
And I would encourage anyone else who feels they are facing intimidation or behaviour that concerns or upsets them to get in touch with police because if we don't know about a problem, we can't do anything about it.
On a positive note, anti-social behaviour in Daventry has fallen by nearly 15 per cent in the past year, with 434 fewer incidents, and crime is down by five per cent. And since the designated public places order came into force in January and banned drinking on the town centre streets, calls to the police about anti-social groups in the town have dropped considerably.
But that is no consolation to the people referred to in your story and the local safer community team will be doing all it can to protect vulnerable people and address any issues that are reported to them.

Daventry Sector Commander
