A SECURITY fence could be installed in a bid to tackle antisocial behaviour in a Daventry town centre park.
The plan would see a fence more than two metres high put round the changing rooms at The Hollow playing fields.

The pavilion has been subject to numerous problems with vandalism and broken glass and litter left around it and has become a focal poi
nt for gatherings of youths.

It is hoped the application for the fence, put in by Daventry District Council (DDC), will lead to a reduction in the problems with antisocial behaviour experienced by nearby residents.

Previous problems include residents of South Close, whose homes back onto the playing field, being subjected to verbal abuse, vandalism and bottles being thrown at their properties by groups of youngsters, who have often been drinking

Chris Dawes, who lives in South Close, said that while putting up a fence wouldn’t do any harm he feels more can be done to tackle the problem.

He Dawes said: “I don’t believe that having the fences round the building is going to make things any worse.

“There should be more facilities for young people in Daventry. If there were areas they could go and do their own thing without distracting anyone it would be good.”

Previously there has been calls for the drinking ban covering the town centre to be extended to The Hollows and Mr Dawes agrees with the plans.

He said: “There still needs to be a drinking ban bought in around the area if they are going to tackle the problems with antisocial behaviour.”

Chris Over, a district councillor for the area, said: “There have been problems up on the pavilion and the residents have had a lot of problems with youngsters climbing the roof.

“This fencing is designed to cut down on antisocial behaviour but whether the installation of this fence leads to any other problems waits to be seen.

“Something has to be done to improve the security of the area as a lot of the residents are subject to trouble from the young people. We shall see whether this fence is a deterrent to the youths.”

The scheme has been recommended for approval by DDC officers and a decision will be made by the planning committee on Wednesday evening.
