THE quality of life for residents on Daventry's Headlands estate is set to be improved following an intensive Week of Action.
Organisations have joined forces with Northamptonshire Police for a week-long operation to brighten up the run-down estate, as part of the Week of Action, which will begin on Monday and run until Sunday, April 6.
Inspector Alexis Terry said: “In c
onsultation with residents in the area, we have put together a programme of events which we feel will help to improve the lives of people living on the estate.”
Throughout the week the Safer Camera Team will monitor speeding, volunteers will help to clean up parts of the estate and talks will be given at William Parker School about anti-social behaviour, graffiti and fire safety.
Truancy patrols will take place, Trading Standards will be looking for rogue traders and the Arson Task Force will identify areas which could be targeted.
Insp Terry said: “A lot of the problems on the estate are because of bad design.
“It was built 50 years ago and it needs a good refurbishment.
“A week of intensive activity this time of year will lead to more substantial things later on.”
Other events include a family health walk, a trip to the police force control room, the launch of the walking taxi at Falconer’s Hill Infant School and the opening of the youth cafe at the Phoenix Centre.
Daventry District Council Gloria Edwards-Davidson said: “I’m delighted.
“I think it will extremely beneficial to the community.”
During the past few years the estate has been plagued by anti social behaviour but, according to Brian Bell, the organiser of the Headlands Neighbourhood Watch, life is already starting to improve.
He said: “There is very little anti social behaviour up here now and the estate has changed enormously.
“I think the Week of Action a great idea and it’s good we’ve got it on the Headlands.”
Organisations involved in the crackdown include Daventry District Council, Northamp-tonshire County Council, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Northamp-tonshire Probation Service.
The next estate to be tackled as part of the operation, which will roll out across the town, will be the Southbrook in the summer.
