Cricket in the Daventry area suffered a rare August wash-out on Saturday although Warwickshire League Division Three leaders Barby did better than most by completing a full innings at Longdown Lane.
In a match scheduled for 25 overs a side after early rain, Barby restricted Leamington visitors Pak Shaheen to 154 for eight before the weather closed in again to leave Barby with seven points to their opponents’ six.
Sulton (50), Shoeb (21), Faro
q and Shafiq (17 each) gave Pak Shaheen a solid platform even though Dave Watson and Stev Stipanovic both picked up a couple of cheapish wickets.
Despite the 4.30pm start no further play was possible with Barby collecting three bonus bowling points and four for the abandonment.
On the previous Wednesday night Barby had completed their Rugby Twenty-Twenty League campaign with a surprising six-wicket defeat by lowly West Haddon who reached 128 for four in 18 overs in response to a total of 127 for seven.
Joel Gleghorn (42), Dominic Batt (24) and Rob Stipanovic (20) led the way for Barby with West Haddon bowler Will Robinson claiming four wickets for only 26 runs.
West Haddon’s batsmen then proved up to the task against the League Cup holders who had to settle for a mid-table place in Division One after a half-century from Les Sage.
The Worthingtons (30 and 22 not out respectively) were other major contributors on a night when Batt (two for 18) and Stev Stipanovic (two for 35) were the pick of the Barby bowlers.
Meanwhile, the weekend rain devastated the programmes in both the Northamptonshire and South Northants Leagues.
This Saturday Barby play Ward End Unity (away) and Hunningham (home) while the Northamptonshire League fixtures include Division Three promotion-seekers Long Buckby’s away game with Wellingborough Indians IIs.
