Woodford United did better than the final score would suggest despite losing by 4-1 to Concord Rangers at Canvey Island in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
The Reds’ led at half-time and the scores were level until Ryman League high-flyers Concord scored three times in the last eight minutes.

Ellis Alleyne fired Woodford unto an unexpected lead after 38 minutes but the reigning Essex Senior League ch
ampions equalised through Thomas Syrett early in the second-half.

A goal rush then followed as Woodford tired in the last few minutes. Fobio Ogigive, Danny Hill and Nick Cowley all netted for the home side to give the final score a lop-sided appearance.

Despite Woodford’s demise seven Southern League Midlands Division teams managed to go through to the next round after no less than four players fired home hat-tricks.

Leighton Town’s 7-1 home win over Chipstead included three-timers for both Enzo Silvestri and James Hatch while Darren Brown scored all three in Romulus’s 3-2 defeat of Loughborough Dynamo.

Sudbury’s Kevin Hawes also struck three times in his team’s 4-1 win at Waltham Forest on a day when Bury Town, Soham Town, Aylesbury United and Marlow also advanced to the next stage.

Former Woodford hotshot Glen Hawkins scored Aylesbury’s first goal on a day when Rothwell and Nuneaton Town both earned FA Trophy replays.

Only one Midlands Division match went ahead with leaders Leamington preserving the only 100 per cent record still left at step four level when beating Chesham United by a 3-0 margin at the New Windmill.
