Daventry Town marked their return to the NFA Senior Cup competition with a lone-goal success over Jason Burnham's big-spending Wellingborough Town outfit at the Dog and Duck on Tuesday night, writes Mike Tebbitt.
Andy Gordon was the scorer on the half-hour to add to the goal he scored as a substitute in the 4-0 FA Vase victory over London Colney last month.

Put through by arch-playmaker Danny Finlay, Gordon drilled the ball into the far corner of the Doug
hboys’ net with an excellent match-winning effort against a home side which included Burnham’s former Woodford United colleagues Aaron Parkinson and Matt Finlay.

Wellingborough did not have a proper shot on goal even though Town manager Martyn Walker rested Josh O’Grady, Luke Walker and Paul Saunders by re-introducing Aidy Greatrex, Brad Harris and Ryan Byrne.

“Scoring chances were few and far between but we did the business even though I made changes after Saturday’s Vase win against Daventry United,” said Walker whose team face the 200-mile round trip to Boston for this weekend’s UCL Premier Division encounter.

Elsewhere Brackley Town were too good for Northampton Spencer by a 6-0 margin at St James Park 24 hours ahead of Woodford United’s home clash with UCL high-flyers S and L Corby. The Desborough and Raunds tie ended 5-4 in Desborough’s favour after extra-time.

Long Buckby knew their Hillier Cup fate more than a week ago courtesy of a narrow 3-2 defeat by Southern League big guns Corby Town after a hat-trick from the Steelmen’s striker Steve Diggin.

Ben Foster gave the Bucks’ a first-half lead but Diggin struck twice in four minutes soon after the break. Jon Crockett equalised for the visitors but Diggin had the last laugh in the 75th minute.
