BY a strange anomaly Daventry United have gone into the draw for the FA Cup competition while arch-rivals Daventry Town will have to wait another 12 months despite running away with the UCL First Division title race.
United themselves missed out on promotion but qualified for the big event by taking part in last season's FA Vase competition.

An administrative error meant Daventry Town missed out on the Vase in 2007-2008 and will therefore have to delay their r
eturn to the FA Cup for another year.

"Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it," said UCL manager of the year Martyn Walker. In the first qualifying round of the Vase on September 6, Town will travel to Welwyn Garden City.

The winners will be away to London Colney or Hatfield Town a fortnight later when Daventry United visit UCL colleagues Rushden and Higham or Feltham.

Long Buckby are exempted from the first two rounds after losing by the only goal at Whitley Bay in the last 16 a year ago.

Meanwhile in the FA Cup the Bucks' take on Broxbourne Borough at Station Road in the extra preliminary round on August 16. These two met in the Vase last September with Glenn Botterill's men winning 2-0.

The winners will be away to former amateur football big-wigs Dulwich Hamlet while Daventry United will take on Barton Rovers if beating Burnham Ramblers on August 16.

A fortnight later Woodford United of the Southern League will have home advantage against UCL side Raunds Town or Harwich and Parkeston.

The FA Trophy draw has pitted the Reds at Concord Rangers on October 4 with the winners entertaining Billericay Town on October 18.

Daventry Town are not letting the grass grow under their feet despite the FA Cup setback as Racing Warwick central defender Martin Hutchinson has been lined up as the latest signing.

Another right back signing is also on the cards but ex-Long Buckby and Rothwell Town anchorman Andreas Kattos has joined Bedworth United.

"We're already training three nights a week," added Walker who has given contracts to goalkeeper Joe Mellings as well as his own son Luke, Tom Berwick, Danny Nelson and Ryan Byrne who had all previously signed on the dotted line.

"One or possibly two other players may be given contracts," concluded the Communications Park boss in identifying Wellingborough Town's new manager Jason Burnham as the UCL's close-season big-spender.

Among the former Cobblers' and Woodford United central defender's eye-catching capture is Daventry-reared Leon Morgan who quit the game (and Leamington) a couple of years ago.
