Goals early in each half from Tom Berwick settled a low key derby as Daventry Town advanced to the second round of the FA Vase after a 2-0 defeat of near-neighbours Daventry United at a windswept Communications Park on Saturday.
“It was a scrappy encounter but I felt we were always in control after Berwick’s early goal,” claimed Town manager Martyn Walker.
The two Daventry UCL clubs had met four times last season in league and cup matches with the Town coming out on top o
n three occasions. It was a similar story at the weekend.
A healthy crowd of 181 saw Berwick presented with a trio of early scoring opportunities, the second of which was gratefully accepted in the ninth minute.
United goalkeeper Ryan Whittle unwisely dashed off his line allowing Berwick to slip inside a defender and walk the ball into the net Jimmy Greaves style!
Bobby Leach and Ross Irvine both fired wide for the Motormen late in an uneventful first-half after both defences had looked shaky under pressure.
Within seconds of the restart, Josh O’Grady hit a post for the Town who sealed victory with Berwick’s second goal after 55 minutes.
Forced wide by Whittle he did well to find the far corner of the net from an acute angle.
Berwick has now scored 10 times in nine games since his early-season suspension but the game died a death after goal number two even though United refused to give up the ghost.
Both teams used all three permitted substitutes with Danny Nelson himself needing to be replaced after taking over from an unusually quiet Danny Finlay. Andy Gordon had started on the left flank because of Richard Wesley’s sickness.
The hard-working Leach caught the eye for United but received a yellow card alongside team-mate Ian Waldock and Town’s Luke Walker.
Seven other UCL clubs progressed to the second round with Cogenhoe leading the way after scoring six of the best at home to Codicote. Raunds did well to win 4-2 at Halstead and there were away wins too for St Neots, Spencer and Wellingborough Town.
There were home wins for both S and L Corby and Buckingham while Holbeach and Yaxley both earned replays, albeit away from home.
