A charity football match in Daventry at the weekend has been declared a great success.
The match between Daventry AVFC Vets and Aston Villa Old Stars attracted a large crowd at Ford Sports and Social Club and was raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Villa brought down a depleted squad, which included Nigel Spink, Darren Bradley, Neil Rioch, Gordon Cowans, Colin Gibson, Mark Kinsella, Gary Stirland, Darryl Roberts and Garry Parker.

They put on a great show of football and won the match 12-0, although the Daventry side came close on several occasions.

Peter Aldridge had a shot hit the post when it was 0-0 and the score was pegged at 0-1 for half an hour but after that the Villa men began to take control.

Organiser Terry O'Neill said he was absolutely delighted with the turnout and the great support he had received from the local community.

He thanked all the players, especially the Villa Vets, for making the day so special and he also thanked everyone who had offered their help and support and all the organisations for their sponsorship.

He added: "As a charity event it was a success. We handed over a cheque for £10,000 to Marie Curie Cancer Care for money raised up to the day of the game, but the players have to get their sponsorship money now, and other money is to be added in the next few weeks."

More than 1,000 raffle tickets were sold throughout the week and the charity auction raised more than £1,300.
