Daventry Town could hardly have wished for a better draw in the second round of the FA Vase on November 15 after coming out of the hat alongside step six West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division minnows Dudley Town.
Like the Town, the Black Country boys won 2-0 (at home to Rothley Imperial) in round one last Saturday but are only halfway up the league table despite a recent run of good results.
Both Daventry manager Martyn Walker and his chairman Iain Humphrey were hoping for another home tie next month and their prayers were answered when pitted against little Dudley.
The Robins beat Southam United by a 2-0 margin at the start of their Vase campaign and have gone onto chalk up 5-0 and 4-0 home wins over Wellington and Ludlow Town respectively in league fixtures.
September player-of-the-month Marvin Nisbett has notched up seven goals already this season and ranks as the Dudley danger man alongside five-goal Danny Ashton.
Town’s own 2-0 Vase win over near-neighbours Daventry United was not all doom and gloom for the Motormen as last season’s top scorer Tommy Waldock has nipped back over the garden wall in a not-unexpected return to the Royal Oak.
The speedy teenager scored 29 goals for United last season but has failed to break into the Town first team despite scoring as a second-half substitute in the impressive 5-2 victory over UCL leaders Deeping Rangers.
In three-and-a-half outings for the Town Reserves, Waldock netted no less than 14 times, including seven goals in one match alone against Wootton. He is sure to boost United’s Division One promotion credentials!
Meanwhile Town chairman Humphrey has placed a six-week order for two 63-seater covered stands which will be bolted together between the dug-outs on the far side of the Communications Park ground.
The main grandstand will then be demolished to make way for the new £450,000 clubhouse which is due to be completed by the end of the current season.
Daventry Town’s luck in the Vase draw was not matched by Long Buckby who will enter the competition at the second round stage after bowing out by the only goal at Whitley Bay in the last 16 during the 2007-2008 season.
The Bucks’ face an all-UCL tie at the Dog and Duck against big-budget Wellingborough Town who are managed by ex-Woodford United defender Jason Burnham and Braunston boy Aidy Fuller, himself a former England Schoolboys international.
Included in the Doughboys team will be goalkeeper Matt Finlay and central defender Aaron Parkinson who played major roles in establishing Woodford’s Southern League credentials.
